Stranded in Denver in the late 1930s, Guy J. Routzon refinished hardwood floors in the barracks at Lowry Air Force Base. In 1942, the sergeant who had hired Guy at Lowry gave him work as a contractor for Frank Burn's Construction Company. By 1947, he was working on as many as 21 homes a day. Guy worked out of his home until 1951 when he moved into offices at 2050 West Ninth Avenue, home to Guy's Floor Service until spring of 1999 when the company consolidated operations at Stapleton. For many years Guy's was exclusively a hardwood flooring shop, distributing Crosett Royal Oak to the Denver community. At one time, they were the largest Crosett supplier west of the Mississippi. Then in the 1960s, responding to the FHA's certification of carpet for housing, Guy's began installing carpet and other floor covering for Denver's residential building community. Today they are a full-service floor covering company that stresses quality of workmanship and prompt, courteous customer service. |
Guy's new high-image headquarters brings all their business operations - administrative offices, warehouse distribution center, and design center - together under one roof: an efficient, accessible 50,000-sq.-ft. facility with plenty of free parking for customers and vendors. The state-of-the-art building provides sufficient space to display a complete range of floor covering products. There is room on the 4.5 acre site for an additional 20,000 sq. ft. of office and warehouse space. The design center is not only well organized and functional but has a homey, comfortable atmosphere. Products are logically arranged making them easy to view, and many are shown fully installed. Floor to ceiling windows allow in plenty of natural light so that products show their true colors, and separate design stations allow seven design consultants to meet with clients simultaneously.
Guy's product line includes hardwood flooring, ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, carpet, natural stone (granite, marble, and slate), and countertops from quality manufactures like Missouri Hardwood Flooring, Mohawk Group, Tuftex Industries, Dal-Tile, and Shaw Industries. Their commercial projects include: U S WEST at the Denver Technological Center; FDIC in downtown Denver; Mullen High School, Holy Family, Precedent Hospital; and the marble bathrooms at the Brown Palace Hotel. Guy's recently finished installing hardwood floors, carpeting, and ceramic tile at the Century Lofts in the Golden Triangle neighborhood and at One Polo Club near Cherry Creek Mall. They work with the Aspen Ski Company and provided the flooring for the Jerome Hotel and Little Nell Hotel in Aspen. "We have a special niche in mountain work," said Sarah Landry. "We've done some high-profile jobs there. Our customers keep coming back and they recommend us to others."
Of Guy's three divisions, builder, commercial, and remodeling and renovations, the builder division accounts for 70 percent of their business. The company promotes from within, and each group is staffed by long-term employees who began their tenure at Guy's by installing product. "We employ our own installers," said Landry. "They are not subcontract labor. Our management team has an average of 15 years with the company, and they all started at the bottom and worked their way up. The field managers have first-hand experience with technical installation. We provide a good work environment, people feel they have something of themselves invested here; they feel as if they are part of our growth.
"We distinguish ourselves from the competition by offering better customer service," added Landry. "We do the very best we can to make the customer happy, and repeat business is huge." Guy's provides each customer with a comprehensive brochure that explains the physical characteristics of their floor covering, how to properly prepare their home or office for the installation process, detailed recommendations for floor care and cleaning, and warranty information. Because they enjoy such a good reputation and offer high quality service, Guy's is able to depend almost exclusively on word-of-mouth advertising and repeat customers. Personalized customer care at Guy's includes daily on-site job supervision. "We have a special customer service department responsible for rectifying any problems a customer might have," said Landry, "and they also handle all our warranty work."
Last year Guy's Floor Service installed over 1.3 million sq. ft. of flooring in hardwood alone. The company takes great pride in their stonework as well. "The granite work and the marble work we do is absolutely wonderful," said Landry. "We have some exceptionally nice slate installed in our showroom and beautiful granite countertops. Besides the flooring and countertops we install marble or other stone in showers and often finish entire bathrooms in natural stone."
The company has grown considerably since the days when Guy J. Routzon operated a home-based business. Not only have they managed to expand their product line to include virtually any type of flooring material, but in the past 18 years Guy's has added nearly 450 employees. Phenomenal growth notwithstanding, the company continues to offer personalized service and retains the flavor of a family operation, just as if you were doing business with the folks down the block. |
