Carpet Information and Care Guide

Welcome to Guy's Floor Service. An over 50 year old company specializing in superior installation of superior products. Guy's Floor Service employs all of our installers and each job is installed according to Guy's Floor Service stringent standards. By choosing Guy's Floor Service you have assured yourself of a long term guaranteed installation. However, work in your home can be a disruption to your lifestyle. In an effort to minimize any inconvenience to you we have written an informational brochure regarding your carpet purchase. We hope that you will find this information helpful and that you will address any unanswered concerns or questions with your sales person.

Again, congratulations on choosing Guy's Floor Service for your new installation.

GETTING READY FOR US: In order to prevent lost or broken items we recommend that you do the following:

Pick up and box items on the floor of your closet, move small items off the top of your furniture and out of the china cabinets. In short, take all breakable items out of furniture that we will be moving. Take down any pictures that might get knocked off during installation. Note any special handling on damaged or hard to handle furniture with your estimator and make sure it is noted on proposal. Items such as pool tables, grandfather clocks, pianos or furniture that need to be moved will be considered your responsibility. Beds are normally included if furniture moving is listed on your proposal; however, water beds must be drained and refilled by the customer. We will move your electronics as a part of your furniture moving price, however, we require that you disconnect and reconnect electronic gear.

We normally cut your new carpet in your driveway. If there is a problem with this please let your estimator know so that arrangements can be stated on your proposal.

SEAMS: Guy's Floor Service is well known for the quality of its craftsmen. By choosing us you are assured of getting an above average installation. Seams can be a source of aggravation if not addressed properly. Seams usually do show but are a function of placement, carpet style, light(amount and direction), carpet color and workmanship. Guy's Floor Service reserves the right to choose seam placement unless otherwise stated in your proposal. Of course, you reserve the right to choose color and texture but remember, as a rule of thumb, the lighter the color and the smoother your carpet surface, the more noticeable your seams are going to be, especially with light coming directly across your seam. Most seams will have a slight peak because of a combination of the seam tape used under the seam and the fact that the heat of a seam iron may cause your pad and possibly carpet fibers to swell slightly. Cross seams are seams that intersect with a long seam usually mad to facilitate the carpet pile running the same direction. Vacuuming patterns may help the seam appearance. Please refer to vacuuming section.

PAINT TOUCH UP: Please expect some paint touch up due to the rough backing of the carpet next to your walls and baseboards as well as the force exerted to secure your carpet in place.

DOORS: If you are adding to the thickness of an existing carpet or pad, or are carpeting a previously uncarpeted surface, you may need to trim the bottom of your doors. We recommend some good carpenters that do this type of work frequently. The cost will be determined by the estimator.

VACUUMING & CLEANING: Most carpet manufactures recommend vacuuming everyday. However, it is unlikely that the normal person has the time for this. Vacuuming frequently as well as a periodic cleaning program can help to reduce the abrasive soils that cause your carpet to wear excessively. A good quality vacuum used in varying patterns is the best way to remove soil. A hose attachment should be used on steps. This will remove soil and set tufts back into an upright position. Vacuuming with, rather than across seams may help the appearance of your seams. Check your carpet manufacturers directions for the recommended cleaning procedures. We will pick up all scraps; however, vacuuming may or may not be included in your carpet bid. If vacuuming is not on your proposal, be prepared to vacuum for an extra charge. Please see your estimator.

CARE AND WARRANTY INFORMATION: Make sure you have care and warranty information in writing before you purchase carpet anywhere. This information may have vital care and warranty information such as 800 numbers or stain removal techniques. If you are buying a plush carpet with a fine tuft, pay special attention to information regarding a condition called water marking or pile reversal. This condition, as well as stairs, are usually not covered in your warranty. Please be sure that you send in any applicable registration cards because your warranty may be void without them. If there is any question, report it so it can be documented if it starts to get worse.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY: Carpet, like many construction materials, may emit fumes that aggravate symptoms in people that are allergic to these fumes or have low tolerance to these fumes. People that are allergy prone or are sensitive to odors or chemicals should leave the premises during installation. Most emissions are greatly reduced with 72 hours with adequate ventilation. Open doors and windows for 72 hours after installation.
